- Facebook has announced that Apple Inc. has agreed a request to businesses a temporary reprieve from paying 30% commission on paid online events. The agreement, which runs until the end of this year, will allow Facebook to use it’s own payment system
- Apple has come under fire from both consumers and app makers for how it runs its online marketplace. Apple demands a 30% cut of sales of any transactions or subscriptions that happen in-app. This has prompted many developers, including Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite, to publicly decry Apple
- Facebook last month introduced a way for businesses to host paid events via its live streaming platform. The aim of this, according to Facebook, was to help small businesses struggling due to the Covid-19 pandemic, switch to ecommerce business
- At the time of it being released, Facebook had not asked Apple for exemption from the 30% cut. Facebook themselves said they would not take any fees from paid-event hosts until at least August 2021
