- Heritage minister Steven Guilbeault has said that “The Canadian government stands with our Australian partners and denounces any form of threats”, after Google and Facebook have threatened to suspend services in the country
- This comes after the Australian government proposed new laws that would regulate social media sites and make them pay money to the journalism organizations they direct the most traffic too
- This comes as many journalism sites, along with other sectors, have lost large chunks of advert income as it has all been taken by Google and Facebook, that contain the large majority of all digital revenue
- The Canadian government has mentioned set of different laws that are in development to regulate social media sites and the share of digital advert revenue they receive, most likely meaning that Facebook and Google will turn their threats on Canada in response soon.
