- Sobeys has begun operations in its new 25,000ft facility that will see robotics used to fulfill orders. The company has been spurred forward by the rise in ecommerce grocery and the centre is the first of it’s kind in North America
- Michael Medline, President and CEO of Empire, Sobeys parent company, said that inspiration for the centre had come from British online supermarket Ocado, who use similar centres across the UK
- Ocado, who have recently been announced as the UK’s most valuable retailer, have partnered with Empire to help create the centre. The C$2.1 billion facility is the first in North America to receive Ocado’s technology
- “Canada lags the rest of the world in grocery ecommerce, but we are a very modern country; we are technically savvy” said Medline
